General Issues
Conflicts of Interest – County Council members should not hold other government positions while on County Council. While their professions are noble, I believe it may be a conflict of interest in making decisions on behalf of the county at large. Contracts – County contracts should be awarded based on performance not patronage. I also propose that all these transactions of the county be posted on the county website. The website should show all who bid on a contract, their bid, whose bid is chosen and the reason why. Disabled Citizens – I support legislation to assist disabled citizens, from access to buildings and transportation to ensuring their human dignity is maintained throughout their lives. As a member of the HEC (Handicap Encounter Christ) sponsored by Villanova University, I have seen first-hand that the disabled are no different than the able-bodied. They are just faced with more challenges and need all the support we can provide. You will see from my less government message, this doesn’t always mean that our help should begin and end with our government. By neighbor helping neighbor we can bring something more than our government, or money, could provide – our love, compassion and our time. Education – I support public school, charter schools, home schooling and school choice. I am single and have no children of my own; however, I currently have two sponsored children through CCF (Christian Children’s Fund) and CFCA (Christian Foundations for Children and Aging). I have sponsored four children over the last 20 years. Employment – A list of all county and municipal jobs should be provided on the Delaware County website. In addition, during these difficult economic times, job fairs should be held much more frequently. It’s a win-win situation for all. These job fairs should not be hosted at the taxpayers’ expense but handled through private, corporate donors who then would benefit from meeting and hiring candidates who attend. Environment – I am a strong proponent of encouraging municipalities to conserve open spaces. I would also apply a ‘common sense’ approach to all environmental issues. Gambling – I am against promoting this activity as a means to provide permanent, secure, tax relief. While I am not against anyone who desires to exercise their right to be entertained by gambling, I feel that we, as a people, can do much better in coming up with ideas, such as encouraging wholesome family and other small businesses, which are less of a ‘gamble’ to this county. Let’s use these types of revenue streams to raise funds for our schools and municipalities. Gambling, as a means of generating income, is not sending the right message to those who are said to ultimately benefit from these revenues – our children. Less Government – While we do need government services for county wide initiatives to provide for the overall health and welfare of our citizens, the role of our government should be limited. We as citizens should promote neighbor helping neighbor without government interference. The government is only successful when the people it governs are able to exercise their charitable and competitive initiatives. Marriage – I support marriage between a man and a woman. Preservation – With my interest in history and architecture, I am very concerned about preserving as much of our County and its historic buildings and features as much as possible. It was very sad when they had to tear down the old Yeadon movie theater, where I was a ticket taker in my youth, and saw some of the greatest movies of all time. Yeadon is my hometown I was able to secure two of the theater seats before demolition, but I was still sad that we had lost a piece of our history in the County. Mrs. Freidman we miss you! Respect Life - As a proud member of both St. Laurence Parish and the Pro-Life Union of Southeastern Pennsylvania, I support the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. Revitalization – More attention needs to be focused on incentives to encourage property and business owners to maintain their property to attract homebuyers and businesses. As a real estate salesperson, I am saddened when I hear people say where they don’t want to live in our county. All of Delaware County should be thought of as a desired place for their next ‘dream home’. Second Amendment - I support the U.S. Constitution which states “…the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” SEPTA – El Reconstruction - This project caused countless businesses to either leave or fail. The lost business opportunities also will never be known. The disruption for commuters and visitors to the area is finally coming to an end but with much pain and suffering. As a resident and consumer in Upper Darby, I was frustrated that the representatives of Upper Darby and the surrounding communities did not do more to see that the reconstruction was completed in a more timely and efficient manner. Mass Transit – Speaking of our County and its connection to the city of Brotherly Love, I would propose the extension of mass transit into areas of our County which might benefit from easier access to the city. Veterans – Anything we can do to better assist the men and women who have served our country, I would be honored to support. As the daughter of a career Air Force man, Charlie Murray, and the niece of an uncle who was killed in World War II at the age of 21, I will do my utmost to ensure that our veteran’s rights are valued. We should recognize and honor them for all they have done for us at every opportunity. My great, great grandfather was George C. Platt – yes, the Platt Bridge was named in his honor. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Civil War at Fairfield PA (near Gettysburg).
